Chemical Process Development Engineer

HOURS NEEDED:

United Protective Technologies is seeking a Chemical Process Development Engineer to perform pilot scale research, recipe development and deposition of various coating technologies including Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD), Physical Vapor deposition (PVD), and Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD).

Responsibilities:

This role will work closely with Department of Defense and other external customers to adjust the product process and finalize specifications.  The engineer will also be responsible for supporting technical writing efforts for various Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) solicitations and developing unique solutions to complicated problems. You will work with our multidisciplinary team of research and development engineers and support staff and work under the direction of our Program Manager. Occasional travel from site to site (Charlotte/Locust/future UPT sites) with some travel needed for kick-off meetings and visiting customer sites. You will be working in an office environment with hands-on Engineering job tasks sometimes in our lab or warehouse as it relates to a project.

Main Responsibilities:

• Lead the research and design of new innovative thin film coating concepts through a deep understanding of tribological, functional and corrosion resistant coating processes, materials deposition techniques, control parameters and evaluation metrics

• Provide coating engineering support efforts on multiple projects

• Author and serve as project lead for coating themed SBIR projects

• Design, modify and troubleshoot deposition systems as projects require

• Prepare technical reports, data summaries, protocols and other technical and regulatory documents as needed.

• Design, plan, communicate, and participate in a daily test plan for experiments run on the various pilot coating systems

• Work effectively with R&D technicians and train them to properly operate R&D equipment

• Lead safety efforts for R&D chemicals and processes

• Collaborates with the production side of the business to improve existing production coatings & commercialize promising R&D products

Required Qualifications:

• Must be US Citizen

• Master of Science (MS) Engineering discipline or higher required (Chemical preferred)

·         5-10years of direct thin film vacuum deposition process experience required

·         Experiencein vacuum deposition system design and troubleshooting required

·         Priorexperience in applications development and/or R&D preferred

·         Knowledgeand practical experience with design of experiments and optimization

·         Self-motivatedwith a high interest and curiosity mindset towards latest technologies andrising trends to capitalize on emerging markets

·         Abilityto work in a fast-paced, autonomously driven, and demanding atmosphere

·         Abilityto manage multiple tasks and prioritize changing workloads

·         Proficient in MS Office (i.e., Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)

·         Strong oral & written communication and presentation skills

·         Ability to self-direct and independently solve problems

·         Understanding of SBIR and military R&D process

Desired Qualifications:

Experience:

Master of Science (MS) Engineering discipline or higher required (Chemical preferred)

 5-10 years of direct thin film vacuum deposition process experience required

Must be able to pass a background check and drug screen.
